April 4th marks the International Day for Mine Awareness, a day to raise global awareness about the devastating impact of landmines and explosive remnants of war, and to call for continued support of mine clearance and victim assistance efforts.

Landmines don’t recognize peace treaties. Even long after conflicts have ended, they continue to injure, kill, and traumatize civilians, including children. This day is a reminder that true peace means more than the absence of war—it means freedom from hidden dangers.

Why Mine Awareness Matters

Every year, thousands of people are killed or injured by landmines and unexploded ordnance—most of them civilians.
Landmines block access to farmland, schools, and infrastructure, keeping communities in poverty and fear.
The presence of mines also slows recovery and development, preventing safe returns for displaced families.
Survivors often face long-term disability, trauma, and economic hardship, needing comprehensive rehabilitation and support.

Mine Action: More Than Just Removal

“Mine action” includes:

Surveying and clearing contaminated land
Risk education for local populations
Assisting victims with medical care, prosthetics, and social reintegration
Advocacy and disarmament efforts through treaties like the Ottawa Convention (Mine Ban Treaty)

What Can We Do?

Support mine clearance organizations such as the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS), MAG, and The HALO Trust
Raise awareness by sharing facts, survivor stories, and progress made in demining
Advocate for disarmament and funding for humanitarian demining efforts
Honor survivors and workers who dedicate their lives to building a safer future
